History of GATE Exam | By Prof Vikas Slariya

When and Why GATE Exam became so prestigiuos !!

Gate Exam, abbreviated as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, is an age old exam since 1984. In those times there are very few engineering colleges and Universities across the country. Even if we name the IITs, these were just four in number. This exam was meant to get admission in IISC and IITs and was meant to get admission in Masters and PhD programmes. I very well remember that the name GATE was always a surprise for us and most of the people in the society were confusing it to a “gate” used to keep things at bay. The reason was that there was no need for engineers to enter into public sector jobs. Job scenario was very positive in private sector. During the year 1992 there was economic liberalization across the country and there were tremendous International investors to invest in segments like retail, automobile, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, cement, steel, etc. As a result the fresh pass out engineers never had to hunt for jobs. They were very comfortably absorbed. If we talk about the packages they got, the numbers fantastic. The average salary paid to to a fresher engineer was somewhere between 7000/- to 10000/-.

If we compare it to the cost of living in those days, I would taken example, where in the cost of petrol was approximately rupees 10 per litre. And now a days, the cost for same is rupees 70 per litre. Means the cost of living has increased at least five times. But if we see the salary packages, even after a gap of 35 years, the salaries offered to fresh engineers are moving about the same number.

I am not talking about the reasons for the same in this blog, but would rather focus on grim job scenario now a days. During the year 1998 to 2000, job scenario started getting saturated. . Private sector jobs became too harsh, with tiring atmosphere, frequent transfers, odd office hours and finally lack of job security. No doubt the salary packages awarded for very high but along with that came the the highest factor of losing the jobs. Fresh engineers used to get dissatisfied after job tenure of 2-3 years. This made them to find a look for alternatives in government sector and public sector undertakings

Now here came the role of GATE examination. Means the benefits associated with these jobs could be highlighted as 100% stability, medical benefits, pension benefits and along with that came the sense of good status in the society.

The only pathway to get into this jobs was GATE examination, and we started preparing students for GATE Mechanical Coaching  in the year 2002. Those times there was no Online Coaching for GATE Mechanical. After comfortable score between 50 to 60, student used to get placed in PSUs. But with the increase competition the score has increased to 90 plus, in the last 18 years. No doubt examination required rigorous preparation, still the benefits associated with it are immense. That’s why the number of candidates appearing each year are increasing, and has crossed the figure of 10 lacs. We have offered the best online GATE coaching for mechanical engineering. Classes taken by Professor Vikas Slariya, who is country’s first author for GATE Mechanical Book, which has been published by McGraw-Hill Education. GATE online teaching is available as Online Classes/ Offline Pen Drive Course for GATE ME as per gate mechanical exam paper
